Guest Speaker – Bishop James Jones
Bishop James Jones gave four inspirational speeches. He emphasised that we cannot preach the Gospel until we have first experienced God’s love. In his exposition on John 13:1-17, he explained the importance of Jesus’ teaching to serve one another. We see Jesus as Lord – on his hands and knees washing his disciple’s feet. The teaching is not just serving, but mutual service to one another – mutual ministry.
In Bishop’s final talk, he spoke of his NT research on Jesus as the Son of Man, Son of Adam, or Child of the Earth. Matthew 12:40 reads: For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. St Paul tells us that all of creation groans, waiting for the Saviour of the World. Bishop Jones emphasised the Christian view that creation is renewed and restored throughChrist our Saviour, a Child of the Earth.
Bishop Jones served as bishop of Liverpool from 1998 to 2013 and is currently assistant bishop in the Diocese of York.
