Aden and the Mission to Seafarers

The Mission to Seafarers first arrived in Aden in 1885. For much of the last 30 years, the Chaplain at Christ Church has also been the Port Chaplain, providing well-being and welfare support to seafarers who visit Aden. As part of the recent Diocesan trip to Yemen, the Mission explored the potential for returning to serve the port and the seafarers who travel through it, later in 2021 or early 2022. We were delighted to be welcomed by the authorities there, and spent a very productive time in conversation and being shown the details of the port from the harbour master’s launch. We were inspired to think creatively about how, rather than when, we might return to serving those who work around and on the sea, and how this might continue in partnership with the Diocese and Christ Church.
