Surgery at Ras Morbat Eye Clinic

Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the world. The public health sector is stretched beyond capacity in so many ways and in most places is forced to focus on survival strategies to meet starvation, malnutrition and a broad scope of endemic diseases like Cholera, Dengue Fever and now Covid-19. Focus on survival strategies leaves general eye care on the periphery of priority for many.

The harsh sunlight characteristic of Yemen contributes to vision problems in children and especially older people, with the onset of glaucoma and cataract at younger ages than in more northern climates.

For many, treatment in government clinics is not available; for the poor, treatment in commercial medical facilities is not affordable. For many years the Ras Morbat Eye Clinic has been welcoming and offering the full range of eye care to the poor, refugees and displaced people at greatly subsidised cost to the patient.
